The Art of Visualization (P2)



Why Visualize?
In the previous article, we talked about what we can visualize on. But why visualize in the first place? Isn’t visualization akin to fantasizing or daydreaming? Won’t visualization end up wasting our precious time? For example,

  • Won’t dreaming of 6-pack abs only lead to heartache if you don’t achieve it?
  • Won’t dreaming of that promotion waste our time and lead to disappointment when you don’t get it?
  • Won’t daydreaming about the fast and a strong finish in that half or full marathon, only make you feel worse as you feel that you cannot achieve it?

Yes, visualization is akin to fantasizing or daydreaming with a specific meaningful purpose.
Visualization won’t waste your precious time if you know why visualization is needed. Visualization is using your mind’s flashlight to focus on something that you want to improve upon or achieve. Without the flashlight, you won’t know where you are going or what you are achieving.

Visualization of the positive outcome will charge you up. Achieving something difficult or precious, with your own hard work will definitely motivate you. Visualizing yourself in a new and improved identity will motivate you even more.

Visualizing yourself losing fat will motivate you. Visualizing your new identity as a ‘healthier’ a person will motivate you even more. Visualizing yourself achieving that promotion and also ‘being’ a good professional will motivate you more than just visualizing achieving a promotion. So, don’t just visualize yourself an outcome that you have achieved, but also visualize a new identity that you would have gained or improved upon. A new or improved identity gives meaning and purpose to your final outcome.

During our day to day existence, we are bombarded with lots of information and we interpret that information based on our knowledge, previous experiences, beliefs, circumstances, environment, etc. Most of the time, the interpretation is negative. For example, we know that fat loss is tough, so is getting a promotion or achieving that time goal on a long run.

Thinking (most of the time you think in images or movies) that you cannot maintain that diet or you cannot work harder than the other guy or that you cannot push yourself to maintain that speed, will only bring you down. Especially, when the process to achieve that goal is hard and the time it takes to achieve that goal is long, you will be overwhelmed. Imagining yourself doing the hard work over and over again for say 1 year will only drag you down.

Breaking up the long process into daily achievable tasks and visualizing achieving those tasks
only for this day or today is more doable and more motivating. Instead of, visualizing yourself getting overwhelmed of not being able to cut down on sugar for 3 months, just visualize yourself succeeding in cutting down on sugar today. Instead of visualizing yourself getting overwhelmed by doing 10 projects to achieve that promotion, visualize yourself achieving all the tasks for today in the current project with flying colors. Instead of visualizing yourself getting burnt out by doing all the tempo runs for 3-4 months, visualize yourself successfully finishing the tempo run today.

Additionally, while visualizing the today’s tasks, imagine things that can go wrong and how you will successfully handle those situations. This will take care of all the risky, what-if scenarios and will also prime you to handle tougher tasks. Your body and mind will be ready to take the day head on. Visualizing can actually feel like you are doing things in real life. Once you are successfully mentally, you will find your body and mind achieving it in real life. You will find a new meaning and purpose in your life to grow and achieve something bigger than yourself.

To summarize,
1. Visualizing the end goal or the final outcome motivates you to achieve something bigger,
way bigger than what you are right now.
2. Visualizing the new identity that you will improve upon changes your mindset and outlook towards life that will bring contentment to your life.
3. Visualizing the process goal on a daily basis, with the ‘what-if’ scenarios successfully handled, primes you to achieve small success. Small successes add up to big success.
Success in one area rubs on to success in another.
